Stop Blocking Others to Shine: The Powerful Truth About Collaboration and Breaking the Scarcity Mindset

I want to share something that has been on my heart for a while—something I’ve seen too often and maybe even experienced myself. We have this tendency, sometimes without realizing it, to block others from shining because of our insecurities or fears. Maybe it’s jealousy, a need to prove ourselves, or perhaps the weight of a scarcity mindset whispering that if someone else wins, we lose. But I’ve understood that we don’t rise higher when we hold others down. We only trap ourselves.

The Lone Ranger Illusion I Once Believed [ Collaboration and Breaking the Scarcity Mindset ]

I used to think success was a solo journey. If I wanted to make it, I had to do it all alone, with no help, no distractions, and no sharing the spotlight. But life has a way of teaching you otherwise. I realized that every person I admire, every success story I’ve ever heard, involved a support network. Mentors, friends, collaborators- they were all part of the journey.

“Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.”

As Simon Sinek wisely said, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.” Authentic leadership and success come from uplifting others, not pushing them down.

Trying to shine by dimming others is like lighting your candle by blowing out every other flame in the room. It doesn’t work. It only creates darkness.

I’ve caught myself slipping into what’s called the “poverty mentality”-the belief that there’s only so much success or happiness to go around. This mindset makes you guard your achievements like treasure and see others as threats. But the truth is, the world is vast and abundant. There’s more than enough room for all of us to thrive.

Carol Dweck, who pioneered the concept of growth mindset, reminds us: “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. In a growth mindset, people believe their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.” When we embrace abundance and growth, collaboration naturally follows.

When I shifted my mindset from scarcity to abundance, everything changed. Instead of competing, I started collaborating. Instead of fearing others’ success, I celebrated it. And that made all the difference.

How It Changed My Life [ Collaboration and Breaking the Scarcity Mindset ]

When I began to support and uplift others genuinely, I noticed something incredible: I grew, too. Collaboration isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength. Helping others succeed opened doors I never imagined. It brought new ideas, new friendships, and new opportunities.

Brené Brown, a leading researcher on vulnerability and leadership, beautifully puts it: “Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” The strongest people I know are those who lift others. They understand that true power lies in unity, not division.

“Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.”

The Danger of Holding Others Back [ Collaboration and Breaking the Scarcity Mindset ]

I’ve learned a harsh truth: when you try to hold others down, you only set yourself up for future obstacles. Resentment and bitterness build quietly but can explode in ways that hurt everyone involved. The people you block today might become the most significant barriers tomorrow.

I don’t want that for myself. I don’t want that for you.

Choose to Build  [ Collaboration and Breaking the Scarcity Mindset ]

Instead of seeing others as threats, I challenge you and myself to see them as partners. Build bridges, don’t burn them. When we collaborate, we create a world where everyone can shine.

There’s no need to dim another’s light to make your own brighter. Your dreams are valid and achievable on their own merits.

Let’s Shine Together

The choice is ours: to be blockers or builders, to dim the world’s light or help it shine brighter. I choose to collaborate, inspire, and uplift. I hope you do too.

Because at the end of the day, the brightest stars don’t shine alone- with other stars, they illuminate the sky together.
