Empowering Renewable Energy: MORE Power’s Enhanced Net Metering Initiatives Approved by ERC
Introduction
In a significant advancement for renewable energy in the Philippines, MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) has initiated enhancements to its Net Metering and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) programs. On November 11, 2024, the company formally requested that the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) consolidate applications for Net Metering and DER Certificates of Compliance (COC) at its Customer Care Office in Iloilo City.
Simplifying the Application Process
Roel Z. Castro, President and CEO of MORE Power, explained, “This initiative is designed to streamline the application process for consumers interested in renewable energy solutions, not only within Iloilo City but also extending to Central Negros and Tagbilaran City.” By consolidating these applications, MORE Power aims to make it easier for residents and businesses to access renewable energy options.
ERC’s Positive Response
The ERC has responded positively to this request, agreeing to facilitate the consolidation of applications at the Iloilo Office. This will include a monthly schedule where authorized ERC representatives will be on-site to review applications. This arrangement aims to expedite the issuance of Statements of Account for submissions from MORE Power, as well as from Negros Electric and Power Corporation (NEPC) and Bohol Light Company Inc. (BLCI). This “One-Stop-Shop” approach enhances accessibility and efficiency for consumers seeking renewable energy options.
Acknowledgment from the ERC Chairperson
ERC Chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta commended MORE Power’s proactive measures, stating, “The Commission appreciates MORE’s initiative in further streamlining the processing of Net Metering and DER applications.” She noted that this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy adoption in Iloilo City, positioning it as a model for other local government units (LGUs) nationwide. “We look forward to more distribution utilities supporting these prosumer programs toward achieving energy democracy,” Dimalanta added.
Building on Previous Agreements | Renewable Energy
This partnership is not new; it builds on prior agreements promoting renewable energy technologies. In August 2023, MORE Power signed a tripartite agreement with the ERC and the Iloilo City government to create a one-stop shop for renewable energy technologies. Since then, 33 qualified net metering customers have received Certificates of Compliance, contributing to a total installed capacity of 4,336 kW and generating 172,997 kWh in October 2024.
Broader Implications for Sustainability
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas emphasized the broader implications of this initiative, stating that it aligns with national sustainability goals while encouraging green practices among residents. “This program promotes environmental sustainability and helps reduce electricity costs for households and small businesses,” Treñas remarked. The initiative represents a significant step toward fostering a community’s sustainability culture.
Support from Local Leaders for Renewable Energy
Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “I commend Roel Castro of MORE/Negros Power for his efforts to simplify the application process for Net Metering and Distributed Energy Resources through the ERC’s one-stop shop. This paves the way for greater accessibility to renewable energy solutions for our community.” Such endorsements from local leaders highlight the importance of collaboration in advancing renewable energy initiatives.
Technical Support from ERC
As part of this collaboration, the ERC will provide technical and regulatory expertise to streamline documentation submissions, installation processes, payment procedures, and permitting associated with Net Metering and DER applications. Additionally, ERC and MORE Power plan to conduct awareness campaigns to educate consumers about the benefits of renewable energy in Iloilo, Central Negros, and Tagbilaran City.
Conclusion: A Model for Renewable Energy Adoption
The partnership between MORE Power and the ERC is poised to significantly boost renewable energy adoption across the Visayas region by simplifying access to Net Metering and Distributed Energy Resources (DER). This initiative reflects MORE Power’s commitment to sustainability and serves as an exemplary model for other local government units. By making renewable energy technologies more accessible, this collaboration aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while lowering electricity costs for households and small businesses. As this initiative unfolds, stakeholders are optimistic about its potential to foster a culture of sustainability in the Visayas. The combined efforts of MORE Power, the ERC, and local governments will provide practical solutions that empower residents to engage in energy conservation while promoting local economic growth through cleaner energy technologies.
