Coron Palawan Travel: Beyond the Itinerary

Coron Palawan Travel

Coron Palawan Travel: Beyond the Itinerary

When people think of Coron, they usually imagine crystal-clear lagoons, dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, and unforgettable island-hopping adventures. Those images are accurate. Coron is every bit as beautiful as the photographs suggest.

Yet when I unpacked my bags after returning home, I realized that the most valuable thing I brought back wasn’t another collection of scenic photos or drone-worthy videos.

It was perspective.

Our recent trip to Coron reminded me that living well has very little to do with luxury and everything to do with how we choose to experience life. It reminded me that the best vacations are rarely the ones that go exactly as planned. Instead, they are the ones that teach us to slow down, laugh a little longer, appreciate good company, and embrace unexpected detours.

Perhaps that is why this article isn’t really about Coron.

It is about life.

When the Best Trips Begin with Unexpected Changes [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

Every memorable journey has a story before it even begins.

Ours started with a surprise.

Originally, our Coron getaway was planned as a five-day, four-night vacation. Like most travelers, we had already prepared our itinerary, coordinated our schedules, and imagined how each day would unfold.

Then, about a week before departure, Cebu Pacific informed us that our return flight had been moved to the following day.

Our carefully planned itinerary suddenly needed to change.

Years ago, I probably would have been frustrated.

This time, our reaction was surprisingly different.

After a few messages in our group chat, someone simply said,

“Everything happens for a reason.”

And that became our mindset throughout the trip.

Instead of forcing everything to fit our original plans, we decided to embrace whatever Coron would offer.

Looking back, I now believe that delayed flight was the first gift of our vacation.

It reminded us that happiness often begins the moment we stop insisting that everything must happen according to our plans.

Life, much like travel, has its own itinerary.

Sometimes the best memories happen in the spaces we never planned.

Our assignment for the evening? Wear black… and show up! 😄 Thankfully, everyone passed. One of the funniest traditions we started during our Coron trip was giving each day its own color theme. It didn’t make us younger or more fashionable, but it definitely gave us more reasons to laugh—and isn’t that what vacations are all about? Sharing this memorable evening with Mark Caanieso, CG Hisona, and Lei Lani Dusaban at Bacau Bay Resort. 🖤

Traveling with Friends Makes Every Destination Better [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

I’ve traveled with different groups over the years, and if there’s one lesson experience has taught me, it’s this:

A destination can be breathtaking, but if your travel companions constantly complain, argue, or refuse to compromise, even paradise can feel exhausting.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the case with this trip.

I shared Coron with three wonderful friends—Mark Caanieso, CG Hisona, and Lei Lani Dusaban.

Some friendships become stronger because of travel.

Others are tested by it.

Ours simply became lighter.

Nobody insisted on controlling the itinerary.

Nobody became impatient while someone else spent five more minutes taking photos.

Nobody complained when plans changed.

Instead, we laughed—a lot.

We teased each other.

We enjoyed long conversations over meals.

Sometimes we simply sat together without saying much at all.

As we grew older, I realized that perhaps the greatest luxury isn’t finding another beautiful destination.

It is finding people who make every destination even more beautiful.

Top Photo: We were enjoying our morning coffee at Bacolod–Silay Airport before our flight to Coron. At that point, CG hadn’t changed into our group’s color theme yet. We had only agreed to wear any pastel color for our travel outfit, but by pure coincidence, Mark, Lei, and I all showed up in different shades of pink. Meanwhile, CG had packed a light yellow top, which technically fit the pastel theme—but we jokingly “forced” him to join our pink palette instead.

Bottom Photo: During our layover at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, we searched the shops for a pink shirt. Surprisingly, none of the stores carried a solid pink top for men. Just when we thought we’d have to give up, we found the only shirt with a pink hue—or at least one with enough pink tones to blend in with the rest of us. CG bought it on the spot, and by the time we arrived in Coron, all four of us were proudly sporting different shades of pink.

Adults Should Never Stop Playing [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

One of the things that made our trip surprisingly enjoyable had nothing to do with Coron’s famous lagoons or breathtaking landscapes.

It was our clothes.

Before leaving Bacolod, the four of us agreed to assign a color theme for each day. Our travel day would be pastel, our first dinner would be black, the following evening an elegant all-white affair, and another day would be dedicated to blue and white.

When we met at the airport in Bacolod, something amusing happened. Mark, Lei, and I had all chosen different shades of pink without discussing it beforehand. It seemed that our idea of “pastel” naturally leaned toward pink.

Only CG arrived wearing a printed black-and-off-white outfit.

His explanation was simple.

“I’ll just change when we get to Coron.”

But since our flight required a stopover in Cebu before continuing to Coron, we saw it as the perfect opportunity to convince him to join our unofficial “pink day.”

While waiting for our connecting flight at Cebu Airport, we began looking for a pink shirt. To our surprise, none of the airport shops carried a solid pink top for men. Just when we were about to give up, we found a light brown shirt with subtle pink hues woven into its design. It wasn’t exactly pink, but it blended well enough with the rest of our outfits that we all agreed it was close enough.

Without much hesitation, CG bought it on the spot.

What started as an unplanned airport purchase became one of the funniest memories of our trip.

Was coordinating our outfits necessary?

Absolutely not.

Was it fun?

Without question.

Every morning someone would jokingly inspect everyone else’s outfit.

“Are we complete?”

“Who’s the best in Blue and White Outfit?”

“Wait… that’s not white, that’s cream!”

Those little moments became part of our travel story.

As adults, we sometimes forget how to play.

Life becomes filled with responsibilities, deadlines, meetings, and endless obligations. We become so focused on being productive that we forget the simple joy of doing something simply because it makes us smile.

Our color-coordinated outfits weren’t about fashion.

They were about friendship.

They gave each day its own personality and turned even the simplest moments into something worth laughing about.

Sometimes, living well isn’t about grand adventures or luxurious experiences.

Sometimes it’s about embracing the child within us, creating silly traditions with good friends, and realizing that happiness often comes in different shades of pink.

Our arrival at Busuanga Airport. While Mark, CG, and Lei were busy pulling their trolley bags, mine had already been promoted to a much more important role—it became our official camera trolley! 😄 Since the airport ground crew were understandably busy welcoming flights and assisting arriving passengers, asking them to become our personal photographers wasn’t exactly an option. So, like true resourceful travelers (or should I say, content creators? 😂), we balanced the camera on my trolley, set the timer, and hoped for the best. Fortunately, it worked! We had already embraced our pink-themed travel outfits, and honestly, there was no profound reason behind it—we simply thought it would be fun to coordinate our colors throughout the trip. Sometimes, the silliest ideas become the funniest memories… and judging by the smiles in this photo, I think our little pink experiment was a success.

Arriving in Coron, Palawan

Coron immediately feels different from larger Philippine cities.

If you’re expecting the convenience of Metro Manila or Cebu, you’ll quickly notice the contrast.

There is no Grab.

No Foodpanda.

No app that lets you order dinner with a few taps on your phone.

At Busuanga Airport, transportation is refreshingly straightforward.

Hotels arrange shuttle vans for arriving guests, while accredited transport providers wait outside to bring visitors into Coron town.

Instead of international convenience chains like 7-Eleven, you’ll find locally owned convenience stores serving both residents and tourists.

For some travelers, these may seem like inconveniences.

For me, they became part of Coron’s charm.

They reminded me that not every destination needs to become another version of a modern city.

You naturally slow down.

You speak more with people instead of depending on apps.

You walk.

You observe.

You become more present.

In many ways, Coron quietly encourages visitors to disconnect from routines they didn’t even realize they had become dependent upon.

Some of the wonderful staff who made our Coron trip even more memorable. Sadly, not everyone made it into my camera roll, but each of them deserves our heartfelt thanks for their warm hospitality.

The Warmth That Can’t Be Taught

One thing that consistently impressed me throughout our stay was the genuine warmth of the people.

Whether we were speaking with hotel staff, restaurant servers, tour guides, van drivers, or store owners, we were greeted with smiles that never felt rehearsed.

There was nothing mechanical about their hospitality.

It felt sincere.

Natural.

Authentic.

That may sound like a small detail, but experienced travelers know otherwise.

Beautiful destinations attract visitors.

Warm people inspire them to return.

I honestly believe Coron’s greatest asset isn’t only its breathtaking landscapes.

It’s the people who welcome travelers with kindness that seems to come naturally.

They say the best part of Coron is its crystal-clear waters, and I couldn’t agree more. But we’re no longer in our twenties—although we’d like to think we’re still in our thirties… super char! 😄 After a full day of island hopping, we all agreed that one day was enough. It was an incredible experience, but it was also physically demanding, especially after hours of swimming, snorkeling, and climbing in and out of boats. Instead of pushing ourselves through another full day of tours, we decided to slow down. Spending the next day at Bacau Bay Resort, enjoying its beautiful pool, lush gardens, excellent food, warm hospitality, and the relaxing atmosphere of Sirena Pier Bar turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Looking back, slowing down didn’t mean missing out—it allowed us to appreciate Coron in a completely different and equally memorable way.

Take a look at our photo below. You’ll notice that CG Hisona isn’t with us in the pool. Why? Because he was “faithfully” attending to his phone the entire time. 😄 Let’s just say he was busy nurturing his luma-love life—yes, luma, not new! Hahaha! We couldn’t resist teasing him about it, but that’s what friends do. While the three of us enjoyed the water, CG found his own version of relaxation. After all, every trip needs that one friend who’s physically present but emotionally… online! 😂

The Luxury of Not Rushing

Before leaving home, we created an itinerary.

But unlike many vacations where every hour is filled with activities, ours intentionally included empty spaces.

We wanted time for coffee.

Time to stop whenever a café looked interesting.

Time to discover a restaurant simply because it smelled inviting.

Time to enjoy conversations that lasted longer than expected.

Time to wander without checking our watches.

That decision changed everything.

Some vacations become exhausting because travelers feel pressured to maximize every minute.

Ironically, they return home needing another vacation.

We wanted something different.

We wanted to enjoy Coron rather than conquer it.

Looking back, I think we succeeded.

We drew the line at coordinating our swimsuits! 😂 But after this trip, we’re already talking about stepping up our game next time. Maybe we’ll pack a few extra outfits so we can change our look in the middle of the day, or perhaps coordinate our cover-ups and beachwear instead. Who knows? Traveling should be fun, and if a little color coordination adds more laughter to the journey, then why not?

When One Day of Island Hopping Was Enough

Like many visitors, we originally planned two days of island hopping.

Coron offers so many spectacular destinations that one day hardly seems enough.

After spending an entire day exploring lagoons, snorkeling, climbing, swimming, and moving from one island to another, we returned tired—but incredibly happy.

Then someone asked,

“Do we really want to do another full day tomorrow?”

Silence.

Then laughter.

The answer was unanimous.

No.

Not because we weren’t enjoying ourselves.

We absolutely were.

But we realized something important.

Sometimes more experiences don’t necessarily create better memories.

Sometimes one unforgettable day is enough.

Instead of filling another day with more activities, we chose something entirely different.

We chose to slow down.

And without realizing it then, that decision would become the highlight of our entire Coron journey.

During our dinner at Kaigan Teppanyaki Bar at Bacau Bay Resort, we enjoyed an entertaining tableside teppanyaki performance, where the chef showcased impressive knife skills, playful showmanship, and a dramatic flambé that delighted everyone around the grill.

Why Slowing Down Made Our Coron Travel More Meaningful

The following morning, we woke up without alarms.

There was no rush to prepare snorkeling gear.

No need to board another boat before sunrise.

No pressure to squeeze another dozen attractions into a single day.

Instead, we made a decision that, in hindsight, perfectly reflected the kind of trip we wanted this vacation to become.

We chose to stay.

Not because there was nothing left to see.

But because we had already discovered something far more valuable than another destination.

We had rediscovered the joy of slowing down.

Blue skies, blue-and-white outfits, cocktails, and a front-row seat to one of Coron’s most beautiful sunsets—what more could we ask for? 🍹💙🤍 We spent the late afternoon at Sirena Pier Bar, waiting for the golden hour. In the end, the sunset definitely won… but I think our coordinated outfits deserved an honorable mention! 😄🌅

Bacau Bay Resort and the Luxury of Having Time [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

Our second full day became a resort day at Bacau Bay Resort Coron, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the highlights of the entire trip.

Travel has taught me that luxury isn’t always about extravagant rooms or expensive amenities.

Luxury is having time.

Time to linger over breakfast without watching the clock.

Time to swim without thinking about the next activity.

Time to sit by the pool doing absolutely nothing.

Time to enjoy conversations that aren’t interrupted because everyone has to leave for the next destination.

Bacau Bay gave us exactly that.

Its beautifully landscaped gardens immediately created a sense of calm.

The pool became our favorite place to unwind.

The service was warm without being intrusive.

The staff made us feel genuinely welcome, something that, throughout our stay in Coron, seemed to come naturally to almost everyone we met.

Then there was Sirena Pier Bar.

If there was one place that captured the spirit of our trip, this was it.

Stretching toward the sea and surrounded by mangroves, it offered one of the most relaxing sunset experiences I’ve had in recent years.

We ordered cocktails.

We talked.

We laughed.

Then, without anyone saying a word, we all found ourselves simply watching the sky change colors.

There are sunsets you photograph.

And there are sunsets you quietly experience.

This one belonged to the second kind.

Sometimes the Best Conversations Happen Around the Table [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

If there was one thing we willingly spent a little more on during this trip, it was food.

Good food has always been part of the way I travel.

Meals are never just meals.

They’re where conversations become stories.

They’re where laughter lasts longer than expected.

They’re where memories quietly form.

Throughout our stay, we made it a point to try different restaurants around Coron.

Some were charming.

Some surprised us.

One admittedly left us less satisfied, but every trip has moments like that, and I’d rather focus on the experiences that made us smile than the ones that didn’t.

Personally, my favorite dining experiences happened inside the hotels.

Both Bacau Bay Resort and Zuri Resort served meals that we genuinely enjoyed, complemented by attentive service and welcoming staff.

If I were to return to Coron—and I certainly hope I will—I would gladly spend another relaxing afternoon at Bacau Bay.

Not simply because of the food, but because of the atmosphere.

Everything about the place encouraged us to slow down.

As for Coron’s dining scene, I honestly believe we only experienced a small portion of what the town has to offer.

Perhaps there are wonderful hidden restaurants waiting to be discovered that simply didn’t fit into our schedule.

If that’s the case, then I’m happy to leave something unexplored.

Every destination should leave us with a reason to come back.

Coffee Stops Became Part of the Journey [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

Some of my favorite memories weren’t found in famous attractions.

They happened in between.

Stopping for coffee because someone spotted an interesting café.

Walking without a destination.

Browsing local shops.

Laughing over random conversations.

Taking photos even when there was no famous landmark nearby.

Travel often teaches us that the moments we never planned become the ones we treasure the most.

Sometimes the journey between destinations becomes the destination itself.

[ Coron Palawan Travel ]

One of our quick stops was a local cashew nut factory, a favorite among visitors looking to bring home edible souvenirs from Coron. Cashews have become one of Palawan’s signature products, making them a practical and delicious pasalubong. We sampled a few varieties before choosing our favorites—proof that some of the best souvenirs are the ones you can actually enjoy long after the trip is over.

Supporting Local Means More Than Buying Souvenirs

One thing I was looking forward to was discovering locally made handicrafts.

Whenever I travel, I enjoy bringing home something that reflects the culture and creativity of the place I’ve visited.

While Coron certainly has souvenir shops, I found myself hoping to see more products genuinely handcrafted by local artisans—pieces that tell the story of Coron, its people, and its heritage.

Perhaps beautifully crafted home décor.

Locally woven products.

Artwork inspired by Palawan’s landscapes.

Food products sourced from nearby communities.

Supporting local artisans allows tourism to create a much deeper and more meaningful impact on communities.

Of course, there was one unexpected benefit.

Since we didn’t buy many souvenirs, we didn’t need to purchase additional luggage for our flight home!

Still, I sincerely hope that in the years ahead, more locally made products will become part of Coron’s tourism experience.

Visitors increasingly appreciate authenticity.

And authentic craftsmanship is something no imported souvenir can replace.

A Destination Looking Toward the Future [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

One pleasant surprise during our stay was seeing electric tricycles operating around Coron.

They were quieter.

Cleaner.

Less intimidating than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.

It’s a small change, perhaps, but one that contributes to a more pleasant visitor experience.

I hope more destinations across the Philippines continue moving in this direction.

I’d also love to see more tourism establishments gradually investing in renewable energy.

With Palawan blessed by abundant sunshine, solar panels seem like a natural fit for many hotels and resorts.

I fully understand that these require substantial investments.

That is why I believe government has an important role to play—not through mandates alone, but through incentives.

Imagine if tourism businesses adopting solar energy received tax credits, easier access to green financing, or low-interest sustainability loans.

Imagine if resorts reducing their carbon footprint were rewarded instead of simply absorbing the cost.

Building a sustainable tourism industry should be a shared responsibility between government and the private sector.

After all, protecting destinations protects businesses too.

Why I Fell in Love with Off-Season Travel [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

Perhaps the biggest reason we enjoyed Coron so much had nothing to do with attractions.

It was timing.

We visited during the off-season.

Many people automatically assume that July is a poor month to travel because of the rainy season.

Fortunately, we were lucky.

The weather cooperated beautifully.

There were no typhoons during our stay.

Yes, there were occasional clouds, but nothing that prevented us from enjoying our vacation.

I remember visiting El Nido several years ago, also during July.

The winds were noticeably stronger then, creating a very different experience.

Coron, this time, surprised me.

The town felt relaxed.

Hotels weren’t overcrowded.

Restaurants had available tables.

Tourist attractions allowed us to appreciate the scenery without constantly waiting for other visitors to move.

The pace felt human.

It reminded me of another trip—our Holy Week vacation in Siquijor.

While we still enjoyed it, the crowds were overwhelming.

Hotels were fully booked.

Restaurants struggled to keep up.

Everyone was trying their best, but no destination can deliver its finest experience when it’s stretched beyond capacity.

Since then, I’ve become convinced that more Filipinos should consider traveling during off-peak months whenever weather conditions allow.

Not only do travelers enjoy lower prices and better service, but local businesses also receive much-needed support beyond the traditional peak seasons.

Perhaps tourism stakeholders could even introduce special off-season promotions for domestic travelers.

Resident discounts.

Special hotel packages.

Airfare promotions.

Restaurant offers.

These incentives would encourage Filipinos to explore their own country while helping communities enjoy a steadier tourism economy throughout the year.

Sometimes traveling smarter benefits everyone.

What Coron Taught Me About Living Well

As our vacation came to an end, I realized I wasn’t bringing home a long checklist of completed attractions.

I was bringing home something far more meaningful.

I learned that happiness doesn’t always require a perfect itinerary.

That delayed flights don’t necessarily ruin vacations.

That one day of island hopping can be enough.

That sunsets become more beautiful when shared with friends.

That laughter sounds different when nobody is in a hurry.

That luxury isn’t measured by the price of a hotel room but by the freedom to forget what time it is.

I also realized how fortunate I was to travel with people who made every day lighter.

Mark Canieso.

CG Hisona.

Lei Lani Dusaban.

Some trips are remembered because of the destination.

Others are remembered because of the people who shared them with you.

This one gave me both.

Before visiting Coron, I thought I was simply taking another vacation.

Instead, I came home with a gentle reminder.

Life doesn’t always have to move so fast.

Sometimes we don’t need another attraction.

Another restaurant.

Another destination.

Sometimes we simply need a little more time.

Time to sit quietly by the sea.

Time to enjoy one more cup of coffee.

Time to laugh until dinner gets cold.

Time to appreciate friendships that grow stronger with every journey.

Maybe that’s what living well really means.

And perhaps that’s the greatest souvenir Coron could ever give me.

[ Coron Palawan Travel ]

Final Reflection [ Coron Palawan Travel ]

Beautiful destinations will always inspire us to travel.

But the ones that change us are those that quietly remind us what matters most.

Coron gave me breathtaking lagoons, unforgettable sunsets, and wonderful meals.

Yet its greatest gift wasn’t something I could photograph.

It was the reminder that life’s richest experiences are rarely found in rushing from one place to another.

They are found in the conversations we share, the friendships we nurture, the unexpected changes we embrace, and the quiet moments that allow us to simply be present.

For that lesson alone, Coron will always have a special place in my heart.

“Coron didn’t teach me how to travel. It reminded me how to live.”
