Battle Against Dengue: My Commitment to Prevention
Living in Bacolod, I’ve always been aware of the looming threat of dengue, especially during the rainy season. It’s a reality that hits close to home—literally and figuratively. Just recently, my sister-in-law was diagnosed with dengue. Seeing her struggle was a harsh reminder of how this virus can quickly disrupt our lives.
As a college and graduate school professor, I frequently receive excuse letters from students who have fallen ill with dengue. Each letter is a stark reminder that this disease is not just a statistic but an actual, persistent threat to our community. It’s disheartening to think of these young minds, eager to learn, being sidelined by something we can prevent.
What makes it even more personal is my own home. We have a lush garden full of plants, which I love. Lately, I’ve been worried that these plants might harbor mosquitoes that spread dengue. The thought that our haven could become a breeding ground for these dangerous insects keeps me awake at night.
Understanding the Enemy | Dengue Prevention
Dengue is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which thrive in stagnant water. Whenever I walk around our garden after a rain, I anxiously check for standing water in plant pots or containers. It’s a constant battle to ensure that my love for greenery doesn’t become a health hazard for my family.
Recognizing the Symptoms | Dengue Prevention
I’ve learned to be vigilant about the symptoms of dengue. My sister-in-law’s experience taught me to look out for high fever, severe headaches, and the pain that comes with them. Knowing these symptoms is not just about knowing them for myself but also for those around me. I am more alert to signs indicating a student’s illness with every excuse letter I receive.
When to Seek Medical Help | Dengue Prevention
After seeing how quickly my sister-in-law’s condition escalated, I realized the importance of seeking medical help at the first sign of these symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, and I’ve made it a point to share this knowledge with my students and friends.
Prevention is Key
Living with the constant worry of dengue has made me more proactive about prevention. I’ve started to check our surroundings regularly for any possible breeding sites. Whenever I apply mosquito repellent or encourage my students to take precautions, I do my part to fight this invisible enemy.
A Community Effort | Dengue Prevention
Dengue prevention can’t be done alone. I’ve begun talking to my neighbors, urging them to be vigilant, just as I am. It’s a small step, but working together can make a significant impact. Every conversation I have about dengue, whether with a student, a colleague, or a friend, feels like another step toward a safer community.
Conclusion
Dengue is a personal battle for me involving my family, my students, and my home. Understanding the disease, recognizing its symptoms, and taking proactive measures, we can protect ourselves and those we care about. It’s not just about preventing an illness; it’s about safeguarding the lives of everyone in our community.
