Negros Power’s Emergency Response Brings Hope Amid Typhoon Crising
Disclaimer: This article covers only the areas served by Negros Power in Central Negros and reflects the company’s perspective on the typhoon response. It does not include or represent the situation or operations of other electric cooperatives or service areas in Negros Occidental.
As Typhoon Crising pummeled parts of Negros Island, the critical question on everyone’s mind was: How is the power grid holding up amid the storm? In an exclusive online interview, Engr. Leomel H. Tambanillo, Assistant Vice President for Planning, Business Operations, and SEP of Negros Power, shared valuable insights on the company’s swift and tireless efforts to maintain power and ensure safety during this challenging time.
Severe Impact, Strategic Response to Typhoon Crising
Typhoon Crising most severely affected areas, such as Bago, in Brgy. Ma-ao to Brgy. Mailum—and the parts of Dulao extending to Sum-ag. Murcia’s Alegria sector also experienced significant damage, particularly with downed power lines caused by fallen trees and heavy vegetation. Even Don Salvador Benedicto faced challenges, as vegetation obstructed some of the towers.
Recognizing the magnitude of the situation, Negros Power increased its emergency response capacity. From 16 regular line teams, the company boosted deployment to 38 teams (RESPONSE TEAM 17; QUICK RESPONSE TEAM-5; LINES TEAM-7; METERING TEAM-6; SLR TEAM -3), adding eight new response groups. “We also have nine previous teams with 4 line trucks actively addressing various troubles across Central Negros,” Tambanillo detailed. This robust deployment reflects the company’s commitment to restoring power swiftly while prioritizing safety.
Safety First—No Compromise
One notable highlight from the interview is the company’s resolute commitment to safety. Despite the dangerous conditions, there have been no transformer explosions — only minor fuse-related issues. Tambanillo emphasized that crews are equipped with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and strictly follow safety protocols. “We regularly remind them of safety procedures and impose penalties for any violations,” he stated. This culture of safety underpins emergency operation efforts, ensuring that personnel are protected as they work under hazardous weather conditions.
Collaborative Efforts with LGUs and Disaster Teams | Typhoon Crising
Coordination plays a crucial role in managing such a complex crisis. Negros Power maintains direct communication lines with Local Government Units (LGUs) and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMO). When floods were reported in areas such as Banago and Barangay Mandalagan, the company acted promptly to isolate these zones based on the advice of the DRRMO. This collaboration enhances response efficiency and protects vulnerable communities from further hazards.
Challenges and Hope Amid Typhoon Crising
The ongoing heavy rains and winds pose continuous challenges, especially with multiple downed trees and obstructed power lines. Tambanillo acknowledged, “We are handling many urgent tasks right now in the affected areas, trying to restore lines in the fastest and safest ways possible.” Despite these hurdles, the resilience of the Negros Power team and their systematic approach promise a swift recovery.
Message of Safety and Cooperation
To the public, Tambanillo extended a hopeful and vital message: “Thanks to our ongoing rehabilitation efforts and the cooperation of consumers, we are not experiencing major troubles overall.” He urged residents in flood-prone areas to switch off breakers and safety switches to prevent electrical accidents. How to stay updated? Negros Power actively posts restoration updates on their social media platforms, allowing consumers to monitor interruptions and estimated restoration times.
He concluded with a heartfelt reminder:
“Let’s all be careful during this weather crisis. We hope this typhoon will not cause any further harm to our families. Safety first, inside and outside our homes.”
In Summary
Negros Power’s response to Typhoon Crising embodies resilience, safety, and collaboration. Their proactive strategy, increased manpower, strict safety standards, and close partnerships with LGUs ensure that even as the storm rages, the community’s power needs are met with care and urgency. This timely communication and transparent operations bring much-needed hope to those affected, reinforcing that even in times of crisis, help is on the way and safety remains the top priority.
