Bar 21 Batchoy Review: A Warm, Flavorful Comfort Food Experience in Bacolod

After a long day at the University of St. La Salle, my fellow teachers—Lei Lani, Dusaban  Jojo Bayona, and I—decided to drop by Bar 21 for a quick, comforting meal. We weren’t particularly hungry, but we all agreed that a warm bowl of batchoy would be the perfect way to end the day. Our visit to Bar 21 again proved why their batchoy is a must-try in Bacolod.

Location and Ambiance

Bar 21 is conveniently located on 21st Lacson Street, one of Bacolod City’s main streets, renowned for its vibrant food scene. The restaurant balances casual and classy, with a clean, well-maintained interior that invites diners to relax and enjoy their meal. Despite the upscale feel, the prices remain reasonable, making it a favorite spot for locals, students, and visitors alike who want a satisfying meal without breaking the bank.

The restaurant’s warm lighting and cozy seating create a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. Whether you’re dining alone, with friends, or with family, Bar 21 offers a comfortable setting that complements the comforting nature of its signature dishes.

What is Batchoy?

For those unfamiliar with Filipino cuisine, batchoy is a traditional noodle soup that originated in the Visayas region of the Philippines and is especially popular in Bacolod. It is a hearty and flavorful dish that combines fresh egg noodles called Miki with a rich, savory broth made by simmering pork bones and meat for hours to extract deep, comforting flavors.

The soup is typically topped with tender slices of pork, pork liver, and crunchy pork cracklings known locally as chicharon. Garnishes such as chopped spring onions and toasted garlic add layers of aroma and flavor. Some versions include a raw egg cracked on top, which gently cooks in the hot broth, enriching the soup’s texture.

Batchoy is more than just a soup; it’s a complete meal that offers a delightful combination of textures and tastes—soft noodles, tender meat, crunchy toppings, and a broth that is both savory and slightly sweet. It’s the perfect comfort food, especially on cooler evenings or after a long day.

Bar 21 Batchoy

When our batchoy arrived at the table, the first thing that caught our attention was the enticing aroma of the rich broth mingled with toasted garlic. The soup was served piping hot, which immediately warmed us up. Each spoonful was a perfect harmony of flavors—the broth was deeply savory with a subtle sweetness that made it incredibly satisfying.

The fresh miki noodles were tender yet firm enough to hold their texture, soaking up the broth without becoming mushy. The generous pork and pork liver portions were tender and flavorful, adding a hearty dimension to the dish. The chicharon on top remained delightfully crunchy, providing a contrast that made every bite interesting and enjoyable.

The fresh spring onions and toasted garlic sprinkled on top enhanced the aroma and gave the soup a vibrant finish. The batchoy was rich and filling but never felt greasy or heavy, making it an ideal meal even when you’re not very hungry but want something warm and comforting.

Outstanding Service

The excellent service made our dining experience even better. Our waiter was attentive, friendly, and efficient. He greeted us warmly, promptly took our orders, and ensured our batchoy arrived quickly. Throughout the meal, the waiter checked on us regularly without being intrusive, ensuring we had everything we needed. His professionalism and genuine kindness added a personal touch that made our visit to Bar 21 even more enjoyable.
