Negros Power Improvements After 9 Months Takeover of CENECO: Upgraded Systems and Expanded Services Across Central Negros

Nine months after Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) took over Central Negros’ electric distribution, the region is abuzz with the energy of transformation. Sweeping changes in infrastructure, reliability, and consumer engagement have set the stage for a future where “wala na brownout, indi na mag-init ulo”—a promise that’s quickly becoming reality.

“From day one, our goal has been to modernize the system, restore public confidence, and extend reliable, responsive electric service to all. The progress we’ve made is just the beginning of a broader transformation.” – President and CEO Roel Z. Castro

Negros Electric and Power Corporation President and CEO Roel Z. Castro presents a comprehensive report detailing the company’s key achievements during a meeting with consumer and business leaders, June 6 at Negros Power main office in Bacolod City.

A Bold Vision Unfolds

In a lively gathering with business and consumer leaders, Negros Power President and CEO Roel Z. Castro painted a vivid picture of progress since their August 2024 launch. “From day one, our goal has been to modernize the system, restore public confidence, and extend reliable, responsive electric service to all. The progress we’ve made is just the beginning of a broader transformation,” he declared, his words charging the room with excitement.

The Alijis Substation, once plagued with aging equipment, now stands fully rehabilitated and equipped with modern, high-capacity transformers. This is just the tip of the iceberg—other substations have been upgraded, boosting the entire grid’s strength and resilience.

Along the 30-kilometer Bacolod–Silay 69kV subtransmission line, Negros Power replaced weary old poles and installed fresh pin insulators. “Guba na nga poste? Gin-ayo na!” Massive vegetation clearing has slashed outage risks, making power interruptions a thing of the past.

Automatic Circuit Reclosers, Load Breaks, and Disconnect Switches now dot the landscape, while insulated lines and rubber inserts keep both wildlife and outages at bay. The result? Dramatically fewer and shorter power interruptions—consumers are noticing the difference.

The company’s people-first mantra is more than just a slogan. Thousands of outdated meters have been swapped for digital models—gratis! Over 100 new payment centers have sprung up, making bill payments as easy as a quick stop at the nearest convenience store.

Applying for a new connection? Negros Power now assists applicants with the OBO permit process, streamlining the process and reducing wait times. Their 24/7 customer service team, accessible via hotline or Facebook Messenger, keeps consumers informed with real-time updates and advisories.

Bringing Light to the Far-Flung

Perhaps the most heartwarming change is the Sitio Electrification Program. For the first time, remote communities—long left in the dark—are experiencing the joy of reliable electricity. “No one should be left in the dark. The Sitio Electrification Program is about progress and inclusion. We did it in 17 sitios and invested nearly 26 million pesos, benefiting 1,671 households,” Castro emphasized. “Ginbutangan gid sang kuryente bisan sa malayo nga lugar.”

Eyes on the Future: Modernization in Motion

Negros Power isn’t stopping here. The company is rolling out a modernization roadmap that includes a centralized control center, SCADA systems, drones for aerial inspections, and GIS mapping for assets. Real-time monitoring is now standard, ensuring faster response to emergencies.

A major highlight: the Underground Distribution System project along Lacson Street, set to wrap up before the iconic Masskara Festival. Imagine: “Wala na sang nagabitin nga wires, mas safe kag mas nami tan-awon!”

“Katahum sang presentation because there is transparency, then at least now it is clear to us, especially sa mga consumers group nga dako gid ang na improved” – Christian Weber of Amlig Kuryente

Competitive Rates, Unwavering Commitment [ Negros Power Improvements After 9 Months Takeover ]

Despite these massive upgrades, Negros Power has managed to keep electricity rates the lowest in the region. Strategic power supply contracts and vigilant market monitoring have helped keep costs in check, providing relief to both households and businesses.

Local leaders are singing praises. Wennie Sancho of ACCESS said, “For years, consumers suffered from unreliable service and poor communication. Negros Power is changing that narrative by putting consumer welfare at the center of its operations.” Frank Carbon, a key voice in the business sector, added, “Stable and modern power is essential to economic growth. The direction Negros Power is taking is exactly what Bacolod and the rest of Central Negros need.”

Atty. Arnel Lapore of CENECO and Christian Weber of Amlig Kuryente echoed the sentiment, highlighting transparency and the tangible improvements that have been made. “Katahum sang presentation because there is transparency, then at least now it is clear to us, especially sa mga consumers group nga dako gid ang na improved,” Weber said.

“Very Impressive, and improvement is far advanced. That is reality. That is why ari kami diri. We will play a proactive role, buligan naton kay aton ni distribution system. Makita naton ang improvement sa diri palang sa new office, ma impress kana plus ang mga reported improvements kag future plans, nami gid.” – Atty. Cesar Beloria ,Consumer advocate

A Promise for the Years Ahead

As the session closed, Castro reaffirmed Negros Power’s commitment: “The journey has just begun. We owe it to our consumers to deliver reliable, accessible, and affordable electricity for years to come. We are asking for the patience and understanding of consumers as we need four more years for consumers to feel the improvements of our full rehabilitation and modernization plan.”

Nine months in, Negros Power’s story is one of leadership, innovation, and a deep respect for the communities it serves. The lights are on, the future is bright, and Central Negros is powering ahead—indi na magpabilin sa kasanag sang kandila, kundi sa kasanag sang progreso!
